AN Irish musician is seriously ill in hospital after falling into water in Portugal.

Niall Dennehy, a member of Cork jazz and R'n'B band Art Crimes, is believed to have tripped and fallen into a swimming pool last week.

It is understood he suffered serious head and respiratory injuries and was placed in an induced coma.

The drummer and percussionist is the son of well-known Cork publican Con Dennehy.

His family flew to his bedside in Portugal following the tragic accident.

His father Con said Mr Dennehy was making slow but steady progress.

"It will be a long and slow road," he told the Irish Independent.

"We do not know exactly when we will be back, but we are hopeful."

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs are providing consular assistance to the family of Mr Dennehy.

His band, Art Crimes recently released their debut album called Radio after it was launched at last year’s Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.
