Bertie Ahern believes there should be a border poll by the end of the decade
FORMER Taoiseach Bertie Ahern believes a referendum on Irish unity should take place before 2030 but only following preparation.
The former Fianna Fáil leader is reported to have told an internal party grouping that a border poll should happen at the end of the decade "when the work is done".
The comments were made to the Cosmhuintir group and reported by the Irish Examiner.
Previously Mr Ahern said a border poll appeared "inevitable" within the next decade following Sinn Féin's electoral success.
In February last year he said: "I think a border poll is inevitable. If you ask me when that is, I think it's probably five years off at least."
