VETERAN socialist Eamonn McCann has said he intends standing for a council seat in Derry.

The 75-year-old was elected as a People Before Profit assembly member for Foyle in 2016 and served for nine months before losing his seat.

The journalist and civil rights campaigner has now been named as one of four People Before Profit candidates for the Derry City and Strabane District Council elections in May.

He said he hoped to give a voice to those hit hardest by welfare reforms, cuts in services, low pay and poor housing.
