Tributes paid to former local newspaper group director and wife of Lord Kilclooney

Tributes have been paid to the former director of the north's largest local newspaper group and wife of peer Lord Kilclooney following her death.

Mary Taylor, who retired as director of the Alpha Newspaper Group in 2014, died on Monday aged 73.

The company owns a range of local newspaper titles in the north, including the Antrim and Ballymena Guardians, The Tyrone Constitution and the Newry Democrat.

Alpha, of which Lord Kilclooney - formerly John Taylor - is currently a director, previously owned the Midland and Tullamore Tribune titles in the Republic before their sale was announced in 2019.

Lord Kilclooney, who became a peer in 2001, was previously the deputy leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and the MP for Strangford.

The 86-year-old also served as one of the north's MEPs between 1979 and 1989.

Among those to pay tribute to Ms Taylor was UUP leader Doug Beattie, who said in a statement posted to social media: "I wish to offer my personal, along with the wider Ulster Unionist Party’s condolences to John, the Lord Kilclooney and the wider Taylor family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all."

Former UUP MLA and Stormont minister Danny Kennedy said: "Sending sincere sympathy to Lord John and all the family at this sad time. Mary was a dedicated Unionist who wanted NI and all its people to prosper."

DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson said: "Mary Taylor was a lifelong and committed unionist with a deep passion for her country. On behalf of the DUP our thoughts and prayers are with John, his children, grandchildren and the wider family circle at this time."

A death notice described Ms Taylor as the "beloved wife of John, much-loved mother of Jane, Jonathan, Rachel, Rowena, Alexandra and Hannah, a dear sister, mother-in-law and grandmother to her nine grandchildren".

A funeral service will take place in Armagh's Mall Presbyterian Church on Wednesday.
