THE north's new chief electoral officer has been announced as Dr David Marshall.

Dr Marshall, a senior civil servant with the NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), was named as the new holder of the role on Monday by Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton Harris.

The announcement follows the departure earlier this year of former chief electoral officer Virginia McVea, who has taken up the post of chief executive of the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Dr Marshall will now take over from interim chief electoral officer Sarah Ling.

He has spent five years with NISRA, overseeing the 2021 Census in a directors role, and is also a member of the UK's Census Committee.

His previous roles also include being an advisor to the Boundary Commission for Northern Ireland, and the UK's Economic and Social Research Council.

Announcing the five-year appointment in a tweet, Chris Heaton Harris said: "The important work of the Chief Electoral Officer and his office will continue to underpin the delivery of efficient elections for all the people of NI."
