Gardai have launched a murder investigation after a woman's body was discovered at a property in Co Louth.

The 62-year-old, named locally as Catherine Henry, was found dead inside a home on Bridge Street, Dundalk, on Wednesday evening.

Her body remained at the property overnight into Thursday as gardai carried out a forensic investigation of the scene. A post-mortem was carried out on Thursday afternoon by the state pathologist's office.

Following the post-mortem, Garda headquarters said detectives are carrying out a murder investigation.

Gardaí in Dundalk are continuing to appeal for any witnesses who were in the area on Wednesday to contact them.

Dundalk Fianna Fáil Councillor Conor Keelan, chair of Louth County Council said it was a "tragic occurence for a lady to be discovered in such a fashion". 

"Our thoughts and sympathies go to her family and friends in the locality. I’d like to extend my sympathies to all those who knew her at this very sad time. It’s a tragic shock for her family and friends what has occurred,” Mr Keelan told independent.ie.
