25-year-old Steven McGhee faces four charges

A Co Down man has been charged with trying to inflict GBH on a woman in an alleged acid attack.

Currently remanded in custody, 25-year-old Steven McGhee faces four charges arising from an alleged incident on April 20 including two counts of common assault, attempting to cause GBH using a corrosive material and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

McGhee, with address at The Paddock and Bridge Street in Downpatrick and who did not appear in court on Thursday, faces a further charge accusing him of causing actual bodily harm to the same alleged victim on April 3.

While the Crown case has not been opened, the particulars of the offence reveal that McGhee allegedly “threw at or upon or otherwise to a person, a corrosive fluid namely bleach, with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, or disable any person, or to do some grievous bodily harm” to the female alleged victim.

On the same day he allegedly twice assaulted the complainant and threw bleach at her, McGhee is further alleged to have tried to pervert the course of justice by offering his alleged victim a £1,100 bribe “to withdraw her statement of complaint.

Remanding McGhee back into custody, District Judge Amanda Brady adjourned the case to June 8.
