RENOWNED singer and senator Frances Black will be among the leaders of this year's famine walk in Co Mayo.
The Doolough Famine Walk is a 10-mile walk that retraces the steps of hundreds of people who walked to Delphi Lodge in search of food during the Great Famine of 1845-1852.
Many of these people died on the journey, and their story is a reminder of the devastating impact of An Gorta Mór, the Great Hunger.
Organised by Irish peace and justice organisation Afri, it takes place in Louisburgh on Saturday and the theme this year is 'Famine is a Lie and War is a Crime'.

Joe Murray from Afri said "the walk is a powerful way to remember those who died in the famine and to raise awareness of the ongoing problem of hunger and injustice in the world today, including the drift towards war, violence, and militarism".
"It is also a chance to come together as a community and to show our solidarity with those who are struggling today, both at home and abroad, including refugees," he added.
This year's walk will be led by Senator Black, Michael Doorly, head of Active Citizenship with Concern Worldwide and Joseph Kabwe Kamfwa from Zambia, who is currently pursuing an MA in International Development at Maynooth University.
Walkers will gather from 11am with registration still open on Eventbrite.ie and www.afri.ie
