POLICE investigating the activity of the New IRA have recovered a firearm during a planned search in Derry.

Officers from the Terrorism Investigation Unit (TIU) carried out searches in the vicinity of Kildrum Gardens on Sunday supported by District and Tactical Support Group colleagues.

On Saturday TIU officers also carried out searches in the Letterkenny Road area, again with support from with support from colleagues.

Following the Kildrum Gardens search, a PSNI spokesman said "a suspected firearm was recovered".

"The firearm has been exposed to the elements and is in poor condition. It will be subject to further examination," they added.

"We understand the impact operational activity can have upon the day-to-day lives of local residents, please be assured we seek to maximise safety and minimise any disruption with any planned activity. Our primary focus is keeping our community safe."
