A Co Down woman whose smile would "light up a thousand stars" remains on a ventilator in Gran Canaria after suffering a major head trauma when she fell on holiday.

Lisa Tumilty (44), from Annaclone, had travelled to Lanzarote with her husband, Michael for a week-long break on March 2.

However, just three days later, the cancer care nurse at Belfast City Hospital, fell down three steps while returning to her hotel after dinner.

She was initially taken to a nearby hospital but due to the severity of her injury was then airlifted to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr Negrín in Las Palmas where she was admitted to the intensive care unit

Last night she remained in an induced coma on a ventilator.

Back home her distraught family have been taking it in turns to fly to Las Palmas to be with her and support her husband, Michael who has remained at his wife's bedside.

Doctors have told the family that Lisa, who is originally from Mayobridge, has a bleed on the brain.

In recent days, medics have begun reducing medication in the hope of eventually being able to assess whether there has been any neurological damage.

As news of Lisa's fall spread back home, a GoFundMe page was set up to help her family with increasing medical bills and accommodation and flight costs.

So far last night, more than £47,500 had been raised.

Speaking to The Irish News, Sonya Burns said what happened her sister is the family's "worst nightmare".

The mother-of-one, who has just returned from seeing Lisa in Las Palmas, was told to "prepare" herself before seeing her sibling in the ICU.

"There was just tubes and monitors everywhere. She's still on the ventilator in an induced coma."

While sitting with her sister, Sonya said she talked to her and played videos of her nieces and nephews so she could hear them.

"It is very traumatic," she said.

Sonya described her sister as someone whose smile could "light up a thousand stars".

"She is such a good girl," she said.

"She would do anything for anybody. Everybody loves her. Everybody is just devastated".

Lisa's uncle, James Gallagher said the family are "overwhelmed" with the response from people to the GoFundMe appeal.

"The target was £10,000 and it was reached within a couple of hours," he said.

"We are very grateful. A lot of people who don't even know Lisa have contributed because they have been touched by her story".

Sonya also appealed for anyone with holiday accommodation in the Las Palmas area to get in touch as Michael and other family members only has somewhere to stay until Wednesday.
