HARDLINE political party Saoradh has held a protest at the headquarters of MI5 in Co Down.

Party members gathered outside Palace Barracks in Holywood on Saturday.

It is understood to be the first time anti-agreement republicans have held an organised protest outside the high security facility, which is located in a mainly unionist area.

The protest comes after the New IRA shot and seriously injured senior PSNI man John Caldwell at a sports complex near Omagh last month.

Organisers say the Saoradh protest was arranged after an "increase of MI5 directed harassment of Irish republicans and their families, including children".

The PSNI monitored the protest while a vehicle fitted with CCTV sat nearby.

MI5 took over the lead roll for gathering intelligence on republican groups in the north in 2007.

The Holywood site has a long association with both British military intelligence and MI5, which is also known as the Security Service.

It has been widely reported that the intelligence body has around 700 personnel based at the north Down site.

They are responsible for recruiting informers and gathering information through various means, which is then analysed.

In 2010 surveillance cameras, believed to have been placed by republicans, were found at the rear of the Palace Barracks base.

The facility has also been targeted in bomb attacks in the past.
