FURTHER health strikes are planned in Northern Ireland this month while midwives and firefighters also consider industrial action.

It follows what has been called the biggest ever strike in NHS history, with tens of thousands of nurses and paramedics staging walkouts in England on Monday.

Strikes were largely called off in Wales as a new pay offer is considered, while Scottish industrial action has paused for negotiations.

In Northern Ireland, around 4,000 NHS workers in the Unite union have planned two 48-hour strikes on February 16-17 and 23-24.

Members of the Royal College of Midwives are currently considering industrial action, while members of the Fire Brigades Union have overwhelmingly backed industrial action.

No further strikes are planned by the Royal College of Nursing in Northern Ireland, but the union has warned it is prepared to continue strikes "as long as it takes," while Unite has said it is ready for "a constant cycle" of industrial action.

In education, most of Northern Ireland’s teachers are to hold a half-day strike on February 21.

Three of the largest teaching unions – NASUWT, INTO and UTU – are taking part, while the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has decided not to join the strike to allow more time for a pay dispute to be settled.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) are still considering strike action.

Lecturers and support staff at Ulster University and Queen’s University Belfast that are members of the University and College Union (UCU) have already staged the first of 18 days of strike action.

Further strike dates are planned for February 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 27 and 28 as well as March 1, 2, 16, 17, 20, 21 and 22.
