A severe wind warning has been issued across the island of Ireland later today.

The Met Office has issued the warning for Northern Ireland from 3pm until 3am tomorrow, warning of widespread gusts up to 80km/h (50 mph), and gusts up to 115km/h (70 mph) expected in exposed coasts and hills.

Some heavy showers are also forecast, which could cause difficult driving conditions.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann has put a yellow wind warning in place for the Republic this afternoon with an orange warning in Donegal. Met Éireann says winds will reach storm force in coastal areas. The yellow warning is in force until 2am tomorrow while Donegal's higher level remains in place until 8pm today.

What to expect according to the Met Office:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
