Third man arrested over Newry murder as police reiterate appeal for information

POLICE investigating the murder of Mark Lovell in Newry have arrested a third man.

The 34-year-old was detained following searches by police in Newry yesterday.

He is the third man to be arrested on suspicion of murdering Mr Lovell, who was shot dead in Newry's Ardcarn Park area last Thursday December 1.

The 58-year-old victim was shot a number of times at close range as he sat in a vehicle shortly after 6pm.

Two males aged 45 and 40 were arrested on Wednesday following searches in Newry, and all three men remained in police custody last night.

Police have reiterated their appeal for information on the murder, and revisited the scene of the shooting on Thursday.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said: "We want to jog memories, and are keen to encourage anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to speak up.

"This was a planned and shocking attack, which blatantly took place at a time – just after 6pm – when people would have out and about.

"Our appeal is backed by an award of up to £20,000 from Crimestoppers, and I'm keen to stress that information can be given anonymously. Crimestoppers will never ask for or store any of your personal details."
