A MAN arrested by police investigating a vehicle hijacking and security alert in Derry's Waterside area last month has been released following questioning.

The 28-year-old was arrested in the Claudy area of Co Derry on Sunday in relation to the hijacking in the city on November 20, in which a delivery driver was forced at gunpoint to drive a suspicious device to Waterside police station.

The incident sparked a security alert that saw residents evacuated from nearby homes and access to Altnagelvin Hospital impacted.

The device was later declared an "elaborate hoax".

A PSNI spokesperson said on Monday the man was released following questioning, adding: "The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police."
