A BELFAST film director has won two prestigious awards for her new documentary on singer Sinéad O'Connor.

Kathryn Ferguson was named winner of the Best Debut Director - Feature Documentary category at the 25th British Independent Film Awards in London on Sunday for her film Nothing Compares, which was released in October.

The film, produced with the support of NI Screen and Screen Ireland, and which charts the career of the Dublin-born singer from 1987 to 1993, also won the Best Feature Documentary category at the event.

It was previously an official selection in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival in the US earlier this year, and has won numerous other awards including Best Irish Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh and the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Aegean Film Festival.

In an interview with The Irish News earlier this year, the director described O'Conner as an "amazingly brave, iconic human being" who audiences found "very inspiring".

In a tweet congratulating Ms Ferguson and the team behind the film for their latest awards, a spokesperson for NI Screen said the wins were "so well deserved".
