A KEY business figure throughout the Brexit debate in the north has been named as the new chief executive of the Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations (NIFHA).

Seamus Leheny has left his senior post at Logistics UK after nearly 15 years as a leading spokesperson for the transport and haulage industry.

Previously known as the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the industry body represents the views of around 19,000 members in the UK.

As Northern Ireland policy lead, the Belfast-based Buncrana native was a constant voice for the industry in the post-2016 era, as it came to terms with the implications of Brexit for the supply chain here.

After almost two decades immersed in the transport and haulage industry, he will now head an organization representing 20 housing associations, that between them manage 57,000 homes across the north.

Mr Leheny said he was delighted at the prospect of a new challenge.

“Housing is a critical matter for communities right across the region and I look forward to representing those interests and building on the great work of the NIFHA team and its members,” he said.

NIFHA chair Hazel Bell said the high profile move comes at a critical time for the sector.

“While our members are delivering new homes and supporting tenants, there are still many challenges for our members, including a growing housing waiting list and some significant obstacles to development.

“Seamus is well known through his work with government on key economic issues for Northern Ireland.

“He played an integral role in representing Northern Ireland’s interests in the Northern Ireland Protocol and Brexit negotiations as part of NI Business Brexit Working Group.

“The experience he will bring to the housing sector will be invaluable, as we work to see progress on key issues such as the housing supply strategy.”
