THREE men arrested following an aggravated burglary in Newry remain in police custody.

Three masked men armed with baseball bats and an iron bar entered a property at Springfarm Heights through a window at around 2.45am today and attacked an occupant.

The victim, who was struck a number of times, managed to escape.

He was left with cuts and bruises and is badly shaken, police said.

The intruders stole the keys to a red Vauxhall Crossland car and left the scene in the vehicle.

A short time later information was received, from an off-duty policeman, that a car matching the description had crashed on the southbound carriageway of the A1.

Officers attended and three men were arrested in the vicinity of the crashed car.

The men, aged 27, 30 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including aggravated burglary and aggravated taking and driving away.
