A TOTAL of 44 uninsured vehicles have been seized by the PSNI across the north in the space of a week.

The seizures were carried out last week as part of the UK-wide Operation Drive Insured campaign, and the vehicles ranged from family hatchbacks to luxury sports cars.

The drivers identified will be fined £200 and have six penalty endorsed on their licence, and owners whose vehicles remain inpounded must pay recovery and storage fees to have them returned.

PSNI Superintendent Gary Busch said: "We normally average 30 seizures for no insurance every week, so last week represents close to a 50 per cent increase."

He added: "We will continue to remove uninsured vehicles from the roads. Any police officer can stop a vehicle, and perform a series of checks at the roadside to see if it is insured. Where they reasonably suspect there is no insurance cover in place, they can and will seize the vehicle."
