A CO Tyrone man allegedly bit his heavily pregnant partner on the face and attacked her laptop with a saw, the High Court has heard.

Martin McGovern (39) is accused of launching the assault after they returned from a hospital appointment earlier this month.

Refusing bail, a judge ruled that the risks were too great.

McGovern, of James Street in Omagh, denies charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon with intent.

Police called to the scene by a neighbour on November 3 found the alleged victim bleeding from her head and a further wound to her hand, the court heard.

The woman was 37 weeks pregnant at the time and told officers she had just come back with McGovern from a hospital appointment.

At the scene she claimed an argument led to the defendant hitting her laptop with a saw and cutting her hand when she tried to grab the tool from him, according to the prosecution.

A Crown lawyer added: "She also alleges that she was bitten on the forehead and on the chin."

McGovern told police that he was with others at the time of the alleged assault.

It was also disclosed that the woman is not prepared to make a formal statement of complaint and wants the accused to be present at the birth of their child.

A PSNI officer told the court: "She doesn't seem to have a concept of the risk the defendant poses to herself, or her unborn child."

Damien Halleron, defending, predicted that without the woman's cooperation the prosecution will not continue.

"As distasteful as this submission may well be, bearing in mind what the court has just heard, this case will collapse," the barrister submitted.

"(McGovern) has actively denied that he was involved in these offences. He has positively asserted that he was elsewhere."

Bail was denied, however.

Mr Justice Rooney said: "It's quite concerning to hear that a man would allegedly assault a woman, it's worse to hear the woman was 37 weeks pregnant at the time."
