A man has been charged with a number of offences after a taxi driver was threatened with a firearm in Belfast early yesterday morning.

The 36-year-old man has been charged with assault on police, attempted robbery, carrying imitation firearm with intent to resist arrest, making use of a firearm to resist arrest, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and resisting police.

The taxi driver picked up a man in the Albertbridge Road area shortly after 2am yesterday.

As the vehicle travelled through the city, the driver was threatened with a handgun and ordered to hand over money.

The man facing charges is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court today.

As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
