A MAN was stabbed in the neck and shoulder during an alleged bid to kill him in an Antrim housing estate, the High Court heard.

Prosecutors said he required emergency surgery to repair an artery damaged in the knife attack.

Three days later hammer-wielding intruders broke into a house and assaulted his son, a judge was told.

Details emerged as bail was granted to a 27-year-old man accused of involvement in both incidents.

David Fletcher, of no fixed abode, denies charges of attempted murder, aggravated burglary and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon in public.

Emergency services were alerted that the man had been stabbed in the Rathkyle area of Antrim on April 1. He was discovered covered in blood, with wounds to his neck, arm and shoulder. Following surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast the man discharged himself against medical advice.

He told police that he had been attacked after getting out of a car to confront the defendant and another man about a previous incident at his house.

The injured party claimed he struck Fletcher once to the face but was then stabbed before they were separated.

Fletcher was detained following a separate alleged raid at the home of the stab victim's son in Rathkyle on April 4.

Two intruders wearing scarves were said to have smashed windows, broke in through the front door of the property and trashed a television set.

Police located and arrested Fletcher and his co-accused at a nearby house.

Two mallets and a broken baseball bat were also seized during searches of that property.

Defence counsel Aaron Thompson confirmed his client denies involvement in the incidents.

Releasing Fletcher to live at an address in Co Armagh, Mr Justice O'Hara imposed strict conditions to ensure no contact with either alleged victim.
