THE head of Ryanair has compared the state of the British economy to a "car crash" that has never recovered from Brexit.

Speaking at a press conference in Rome, Michael O'Leary said the recent controversy surrounding the mini-budget "was a kind of spectacular failure of the whole concept of Brexit."

It follows a day of high political drama at Westminster on Monday, with newly appointed chancellor Jeremy Hunt tearing up Prime Minister Liz Truss' plans for the economy.

Some Conservative MPs have now openly called for her to go, but Ms Truss insists she will lead her party into the next general election.

Mr O'Leary added that a priority must now be for Britain to secure a sensible trading arrangement with the EU, and that Ms Truss will be out of a job within weeks.

"The mini budget has been reversed. So she’s in office, but not in power," he said.

"She got elected by appealing to all the Brexiteers for the last three months and it is the ultimate, I think, failure of Brexit and the Brexiteers."

Welcoming the appointment of Jeremy Hunt, he said: "The remainers are coming back, the adults are taking charge again ... we will return to some sensible economic policies."
