A FIRE at a Carrickfergus restaurant is being treated as accidental.

The blaze broke out in the kitchen of the Windrose Bar and Bistro in the Rodgers Quay area of the Co Antrim town shortly after noon on Sunday.

Staff and diners were evacuated as emergency services were called to the scene.

A PSNI spokesperson said officers attended and assisted with evacuating the venue as firefighters arrived.

"There were no reports of any serious injuries," the spokesperson added.

NI Fire and Rescue Service group commander Dermot McPoland told The Irish News that a total of 19 firefighters helped tackle the blaze.

"Four appliances and a special aerial appliance attended the fire, which is being treated as accidental and originated in the kitchen," he said, adding that the fire was extinguished by 2.30pm.

In a statement on social media, a spokesperson for the Windrose said: "Thanks to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue services the fire was quickly extinguished and contained within the downstairs kitchens.

"We hope to be open again by the weekend."

They added that anyone that has paid deposits or booked functions for the period of closure would be "fully refunded".
