A man has died following a house fire in Newry last night.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said it was called to a terraced property on Stream Street in the Co Down town at around 8.18pm.

Assistant Chief Fire and Rescue Officer Aidan Jennings said the fire was out when fire fighters arrived "and tragically a male casualty died as a result of the incident".

NIFRS believes the cause of the fire was "accidental ignition”.

“The thoughts and sympathies of Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) are with the family and friends of a man who died following a fire on Stream Street, Newry," he added.

Mr Jennings said three fire appliances attended and the incident had ended by 11.05pm.
