POLICE have launched a murder probe after a man assaulted in Belfast city centre last weekend died.

The victim, who was in his thirties and who has not been named, is believed to have been assaulted in the Callender Street area in the early hours of Sunday. He was later found in the Castle Street area with serious injuries at around 8am and taken to hospital where he was in critical condition.

Police confirmed yesterday the man has since died.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and was being questioned last night.

A PSNI spokesman last night said: "Our enquiries continue, and I am appealing to anyone with information, or who may have captured dash cam footage, to get in touch. If you were in the area of Callender Street, Chichester Street, Donegal Square, Donegal Place, Royal Avenue or Castle Place between 4am and 8am on Sunday August 14, please contact us."
