A LORRY driver in his twenties has died following a crash in Co Tyrone.

The one-vehicle collision occurred shortly before 8.20am on the A5 Beltany Road outside Omagh.

The driver, who was behind the wheel of a Scania articulated lorry, died as a result of his injuries.

Police closed a stretch of the A5 after the crash.

The nearby Ulster American Folk Park and Sperrin Restaurant announced they would remain closed to visitors for the remainder of the day. The Mellon Country Inn Hotel said it was closing to non-guests.

Police confirmed the death and said the A5 into Omagh would remain closed overnight.

“We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have any dashcam footage or information which could assist officers with their enquiries, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, and quote reference number 310 of 16/08/2,” a spokesperson said.

West Tyrone MP Órfhlaith Begley said the area was "deeply shocked and saddened at this latest tragedy", adding: "I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the immediate and wider family circle of the deceased."

Omagh DUP councillor Errol Thompson, who lives close to the Beltany Road, told The Irish News: “This is very tragic news and my thoughts are with this young man’s family.”

He said there has been “many fatalities” on the A5 over the years, adding: “There are plans for the long-awaited A5 Western Transport Corridor upgrade, but as it is, it can be a dangerous stretch of road, and I would appeal to everyone using it to take care and be mindful.”

Omagh Alliance councillor Stephen Donnelly said in a social media post last night he was “devastated” to learn of the tragedy.

“This will be a time of intense grief and loss for his family and friends and I know our whole community will come together in standing with them,” he said.
