COVID boosters for over the over-fifties will be launched next month, the Public Health Agency has said.

The agency said it is finalising its winter vaccination plans, including for the flu vaccine.

"As in previous years the vaccination programme will launch mid to late September and further details will follow at that stage," a spokeswoman said.

Boosters will be available across the north for groups including health and social care workers, pregnant women, carers and those at clinical risk.

In the Republic, pregnant women and people over 60 began receiving their second booster vaccination against Covid-19 from yesterday.

The injections are being administered at vaccination centres and some pharmacies around the country.

The President of the Irish Pharmacy Union, Dermot Twomey, who runs a pharmacy in Cloyne, Co Cork, told RTÉ's Morning Ireland that over the next month people in younger age groups will be able to get a second booster.

"From today it's individuals aged 60 or over and those women who are pregnant from 16 weeks on. From next week, 22 August, it will be individuals 55 and over. The following Monday 29 August - individuals 50 and over," he said.
