A PETROL bomb thrown in Coleraine early yesterday was the ninth attack in the town since late April.

Police are investigating if yesterday's attack was linked to others, amid a spate of incidents since April 24.

Shortly before 1am yesterday, a bomb was thrown at a man's house in Loughanhill Park. When he opened his front door, he found a bomb alight. He put it out with water, although the door's window pane was damaged.

Police said although a probe is at an early stage they are investigating if yesterday's attack was linked to other petrol bombings.

A spokesman said: "Reckless attacks such as these are not wanted by anyone and do nothing but cause harm and damage to the local community who we know just want to live in peace.

"Petrol bomb attacks are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. They have the potential to cause serious injuries or even loss of life, to those inside properties and any passers-by.

"People also engaging in this type of criminal behaviour are risking, not only their own safety, but they also face the possibility of a criminal conviction which can have life changing consequences."

East Derry MLA Claire Sugden said the increasing number of attacks is "deeply worrying and totally unacceptable".

"They pose the very real danger of someone being seriously injured or killed and it is only through sheer good fortune that, so far, the victims have escaped without major injury," she said.

"Apart from the incredibly dangerous and life-threatening nature of these attacks on those targeted, they also create fear right across these communities.

"This is unacceptable. People have the right to live happily and feel safe in their homes, free of threats like this. This situation must be got to grips with and the perpetrators brought to justice."
