A MAN who died following a crash between his motorbike and a car in Newry has been remembered as a "great character".

Rodney 'Cozy' Powell was killed when his motorbike crashed into a Mini shortly after 11am on the Old Dublin Road on Saturday.

The father-of-two, who was in his fifties, is survived by his wife Janet, children Andrew and Aoife, and wider family circle.

Sinn Féin councillor Roisin Mulgrew said she first met Mr Powell several decades ago.

"I first met Cozy 35 years-ago in the Cobweb, he was a man of many interests especially motorbikes and at that stage the Sub Aqua club," she wrote in an online tribute.

"Maurice and I were very blessed to have had him as a friend, a great character always a great story to tell and hilariously funny.

"May you rest in peace Cozy and my thoughts and prayers are with Janet, the children, your mum, (brother) Mostyn, Grainne and the wider family not to mention your friends."

Requiem Mass for Mr Powell will be celebrated at St Catherine’s Church in Newry at 12.30pm today, followed by burial in Monkshill cemetery.
