AN investigation is to get underway by the Health and Safety Executive after a man in his seventies died in a suspected farming accident in Co Antrim.

The incident occurred yesterday in the Rectory Road area outside Larne.

Police attended the scene of the "sudden death" yesterday afternoon before closing the road.

A PSNI spokesperson said last night: "The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

"Police have advised the Health and Safety Executive, and will provide assistance with their investigation."

It is understood the Air Ambulance was tasked alongside crews from Larne.

The name of the deceased has yet to be released.

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) confirmed it had "received a report of an incident on a farm".

"Enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding it."

Monday's tragedy comes weeks after the HSE called for farmers in the north to embrace safer agriculture practices and technologies.

Data shows there were seven farming fatalities in the north in 2020/21 - up from just one the previous year.

Larne DUP councillor Paul Reid told The Irish News: "This is a shocking tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the man's family as they come to terms with what has happened.

"I would encourage all farmers to please, be extremely careful while at work at this very busy time of year for them."
