THE month's mind Mass for Irish News chairman Jim Fitzpatrick is due to be celebrated on Saturday.

As a Redemptorist Oblate, the service for Mr Fitzpatrick (92) will be celebrated at Clonard Monastery at 3pm.

The father-of-eight, who died on June 25 following a short illness, had strong links to the Redemptorists.

As a young man, Mr Fitzpatrick was educated in Limerick by the Redemptorist Fathers and decided to join the religious congregation, with the intention of becoming a priest.

However, by the age of 22, he decided the priesthood was not for him.

He went onto become a visionary newspaper proprietor, solicitor and entrepreneur.

Heartfelt tributes poured in for Mr Fitzpatrick following his death, with many describing him as a "giant of the newspaper industry" and "the very definition of a great businessman".

He played an active role in The Irish News for more than half a century. As proprietor since the early 1980s, under his leadership the newspaper has established itself as the north's biggest-selling daily title.

He also made important contributions behind the scenes during the peace process and was closely involved with a range of business, civic and charitable organisations.

Figures from business, journalism and politics from across Ireland were among the hundreds of mourners who attended his Requiem Mass at St Brigid's Church in south Belfast.

His final resting place will be in the columbarium at St Patrick's Church on Donegall Street, alongside his beloved wife Alice, who died in 2013.

Mr Fitzpatrick's family have said that all friends and colleagues are welcome to attend the month's mind Mass.
