A COUNCILLOR who died suddenly has been remembered for his youth mental health support work and efforts to remove paramilitary flags.

Glenn Finlay (41) served independently on Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council having been suspended from the Alliance Party six months ago.

The Alliance Party said last night that it was "shocked by the sudden death".

Mr Finlay was elected in 2019 and left the party in December last year on a “precautionary and without prejudice basis".

Friends on social media praised Mr Finlay's efforts in fighting period poverty, his success in removing paramilitary flags in the area and his ongoing youth mental health support.

His son Dylan shared a photograph on Facebook of him and his father at this week's Iron Maiden concert in Belfast and posted a short message asking for privacy to grieve.

A spokesperson for Antrim and Newtownabbey council said: "The council is sorry to learn of the passing of councillor Glenn Finlay. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time."

SDLP councillor Ryan Wilson, who also serves the Dunsilly area, said: "The news of councillor Finlay's death will come as huge shock to all those who served with him and the local community. This will undoubtedly be a very difficult time for his family and friends and I hope that they are given the privacy and space they need to grieve."
