A WEST Belfast classroom assistant who died after suffering a serious head injury in an accident was laid to rest yesterday.

Briege O'Brien was taken to hospital but later died on Monday June 6.

The mother-of-two had worked as a classroom assistant at De La Salle College for 15 years.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church in Turf Lodge yesterday afternoon.

Several mourners wore bright colours, as requested by Ms O'Brien's family.

Members of O’Donovan Rossa GAC were among those who lined up to pay tribute.

Her son Aodhan O’Brien is a senior hurler at the club and her son Conor McClelland is a former senior hurler.

De La Salle College said last week that its staff and pupils were devastated by the loss of a "much loved, dedicated and caring" classroom assistant.

In a statement, it said she "embodied the very best of Lasallian spirit in action; her warm smile and generous, selfless nature were instrumental in helping pupils in her care to learn and develop".

"Nothing was ever too much trouble for Briege and she always went the extra mile.

"Briege will be sorely missed by pupils, staff and the wider school community she served so faithfully."
