A NEW memorial stone has been dedicated to victims of the IRA's bombing of Coleraine during a service in the town on Sunday.

The event was held at the spot in Railway Street where one of two car bombs exploded on June 12 1973, killing six people and injuring 33 people.

Sunday marked the 49th anniversary of the attack, and the new memorial stone comes ahead of plans to erect a new sculpture at Coleraine Town Hall in time for the 50th anniversary.

Recently appointed Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, the DUP's Ivor Wallace said at yesterday's service: "We gather around the bereaved family members and those injured to afford them their rightful place and show them the respect and support they deserve as we navigate this complex and emotive process.

"I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank those who have played a part in this initiative – we recognise your ongoing hurt and pain and I hope that you can take some comfort from seeing this project progress."
