A CO Donegal couple have hit out after their car was left undriveable after vandals attacked it while parked at Belfast International Airport.

Michael Gallagher and his partner Isabel Shovlin from Donegal Town were just one day into their trip to Malaga when they received a phone call from police to inform them the Ford Fiesta had been damaged while parked at the airport.

A brick had been thrown through the car window and attempts had been made to break other windows.

Other damage was caused to the vehicle, leaving it unable to be driven, with the couple forced to make arrangements for it to be removed and towed to a garage in Derry.

The couple said they had paid £60 to park at the main airport carpark, believing it would be the safest option for their vehicle, but have been left angered at being told by airport authorities there is no cover for the damage caused.

Police are investigating the damage.

An airport spokeswoman said: "It is regrettable that this customer’s vehicle was damaged at the airport’s car park and we apologise that her experience was not positive.

"Unfortunately, no public car park can be totally secure. Whilst we have CCTV and patrols in place, there is no guarantee that a vehicle will not be damaged or remain secure.

"We have spoken with this customer a number of times to resolve the matter and airport police have been investigating the incident. In this instance, the damage has been caused by a third party and we would advise the customer to seek damages through her motor insurance policy and we are happy to assist the customer with this process.

"As a gesture of goodwill, we have offered to refund the full parking fee of £60 due to the stress and inconvenience caused by this incident."
