THE funeral has taken place of a south Belfast man who died following an alleged assault.

Family and friends of David Conville (34) gathered to say their final farewells at a service held at his home at Abingdon Drive, off the Donegall Road.

The father-of-two suffered a serious head injury during an alleged attack last month and died on May 30.

Tributes were paid to Mr Conville, with many describing him as a "true gentleman" and others talking about the "heartache and devastation".

A man has been remanded into custody in connection with Mr Conville's death.

Edward James Kelly (30) of Felt Street in Belfast appeared before the city's magistrates court last week charged with manslaughter.

No further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged altercation were disclosed.

But defence solicitor Denis Moloney told District Judge Ted Magill: "This was nothing more than a tragic accident (involving) his very best friend.

"Your worship will see from the defendant’s demeanour that this matter will haunt him."

Kelly was remanded in continuing custody to appear again later this month.

Following the funeral service today, Mr Conville was taken to Roselawn Cemetery.
