SECURITY waiting times at Dublin Airport were down to just 10 minutes at one point on Sunday following last weekend's chaos that saw around 1,400 people miss flights due to queues.

The airport's website said yesterday passengers travelling through Terminal 2 could expect 10 minutes of queueing, with waits at Terminal 1 around 25 minutes.

The improved times came days after the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) was ordered to publish a plan for the expected increase in demand during the Republic's bank holiday weekend.

The south's transport minister Eamon Ryan told the DAA to reveal how it was going to manage passengers in the wake of last weekend's scenes of winding queues at the travel hub, which made international news.

Delays at the airport have been blamed on a shortage of security staff and an increase in passengers following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The DAA reduced its workforce by around 25 percent last year when demand for international travel was low.

Other air hubs in Europe, including Schipol Airport in Amsterdam, have also seen an increase in waiting times in recent weeks.

DAA chief executive Dalton Philips spoke at the Oireachtas Transport Committee last week to outline how it would prevent a repeat of last week's scenes.

During the appearance he admitted the 248 security staff should not have been offered voluntary redundancy during the pandemic.

On Saturday the DAA said passengers were "moving smoothly" through the airport, however cancellations to a flight to Greece saw some holidaymakers forced to sleep on mats overnight.

The TUI flight to Rhodes was cancelled three times, and the airline apologised to those impacted and blamed "recent disruption to our operations".

Yesterday the airport said staff were expecting a "very busy" wave of travellers, but a spokesperson added "there were none of the delays experienced last Sunday".

The longest waiting times yesterday were reported in Terminal 1 at 44 minutes.
