Vandalism of trees at Co Down tourist spot described as 'disgraceful'

THE destruction of trees at a popular Co Down tourist spot has been described as "disgraceful".

Seven Scots Pine trees were felled at the Dundrum Bay picnic area early last week with a further six trees later damaged.

Police are investigating the vandalism at the site, which includes a picnic area, children's play area and public toilets.

Sinn Féin councillor Willie Clarke hit out at the vandalism, which happened between May 23 and 25.

"Disgraceful action in destroying seven semi mature native trees, Scot’s pine, have been cut down at the Dundrum Bay recreation area by persons unknown," he said.

"The trees which were about 20 years old were planted in the green area between the public toilet and the main road.

"Mindless action destroying native trees while the majority of the community want to increase the coverage of new trees.

"Wise up and catch yourself on. Your on the wrong page."

SDLP councillor Laura Devlin also condemned the "act of vandalism".

"The grounds maintenance team in council do an excellent job trying to make our district as nice as possible for locals and visitors so for someone person or people to do such a thing is appalling.

"This is a very busy road between Newcastle and Dundrum . If you seen anything please contact the police and report it.

"The police are dealing with this. Whoever did this needs caught."

Police said they have received a report that a number of trees were cut down in the area of Dundrum Road.

"Enquiries are continuing and police are appealing for anyone who may have witnesses any suspicious activity in the area, or have any information which could assist, to contact 101."
