A MAN in his 60s has been headbutted and kicked in the head during a serious assault in Bangor.

The victim was left with facial fractures and an ear injury following the attack in the Castle Street area of the Co Down town at around 10pm on Saturday night.

Police say the assault followed an altercation in nearby licensed premises a short time earlier.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to his in juries, while a 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He remained in police custody last night.

"Detectives would ask anyone with any information about this incident or who may be able to help with the investigation, to call them on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1993 21/05/22," a PSNI spokesperson said.
