GAA PRESIDENT Larry McCarthy has planted a tree in memory of Sean Brown on the 25th anniversary of his murder.

The GAAs most senior official joined family and friends of Mr Brown in the Co Derry village of Bellaghy for a short ceremony last night.

A memorial stone was also unveiled and includes an inscription from Seamus Heaney's work, The Augean Stables, which makes reference to the Murder of Mr Brown.

Hollywood actor Stephen Rea read from the work of Mr Heaney, who knew Mr Brown and his family.

The event took place beside the 'Turf Man' statue , which was inspired by Mr Heaney and is located close to Bellaghy Wolfe Tones GAA club.

A tree was also planted by Mr McCarthy, who also addressed those who had gathered.

A minute's silence was held before those taking part made their way to the grounds of Bellaghy GAA club for a special Mass.

Mr Brown was attacked and beaten by LVF members as he locked the gates at the club on May 12 1997.

The 61-year-old club chairman was then put in the boot of his own car and taken to a country lane outside Randalstown in Co Antrim where he was shot six times.

His remains were later found beside his burning car.

No-one has ever been charged in connection with his murder.

Yesterday's ceremony came hours after the PSNI apologised in court for "inadequacies" in the RUC investigation and agreed a settlement.
