A NEW trade union banner in memory of Lyra McKee will be unveiled on the third anniversary of her murder on Monday.

The 29-year-old was shot dead by the New IRA as she observed a riot in the Creggan estate in Derry on April 18, 2019.

To date, three people have been charged with Ms McKee's murder.

The new banner will be unveiled by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) on the steps of St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast at 11am.

The union will also hold a vigil at 11.30am in Guildhall Square in Derry.

NUJ Belfast and District chair, Robin Wilson, said Ms McKee was an "exceptionally talented and tenacious journalist whose career was tragically cut short by an act of senseless violence".

"Monday's vigil is, first and foremost, an opportunity to remember a much-loved friend and colleague," he said.

"It also gives us a chance to celebrate her professional legacy, which continues to inspire journalists and others who are committed to an open and fair democracy."

Mr Wilson said many journalists in Northern Ireland "still work under threat of violence".

"The NUJ repeats its call for Lyra McKee's killers to be brought to justice and for the government and its agencies, including the PSNI, to ensure the safety of our members," he said.

"As ever, our thoughts on Lyra's anniversary will be with her sister, Nichola, her partner, Sara, and her wider circle of family and friends."

PSNI Detective Superintendent Eamonn Corrigan said officers' thoughts are with Ms McKee's family.

"Lyra’s family not only continue to mourn for her but also for her mother, who sadly passed away after Lyra's murder," he said.

"To date, as part of our ongoing investigation, we have made 30 arrests and nine people have been charged, three with murder and six with public order offences.

"The investigation into Lyra’s murder remains very active and I would like to thank the community for their response and support throughout our investigation.

"I want to re-state the commitment of the police service to work with the community as we collectively seek to release communities from the influence of terrorists."

He asked anyone who may have information about the murder to contact detectives on 101.

Independent charity Crimestoppers is offering a £10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those involved in Ms McKee's murder. The charity can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
