TWO men accused of breaking into garden sheds in south Belfast have 12 different aliases between them, a court has heard.

Yousif El Naser (21) and Aivas Matuzelis (20) are charged in connection with raids on outhouses and garages at five properties on Galwally Avenue on Monday with three bicycles and alcohol stolen.

El Naser, an Egyptian national, appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court charged with burglaries at five sheds and is further accused of targeting a house at Newforge Lane on March 26 to steal a PlayStation games console and camera.

Matuzelis, originally from Latvia, faces five counts of burglary with intent to steal and possessing a bladed article and a Stanley style utility knife.

With both defendant addresses given as hostel accommodation at Utility Street in Belfast, police opposed bail and raised concerns about their identities.

El Naser previously provided five aliases, while Matuzelis gave police seven different names, it was claimed.

Defence solicitor Ciaran Maguire, for El Naser, said his client denies the charges, is not forensically linked and claims he was only in the area to visit a friend.

Matuzelis' barrister, Michael Boyd, stressed he has lived in Northern Ireland all his life.

Both defendants were granted bail on conditions, which include a curfew and ban on entering Galwally Avenue.

The cases were adjourned to April 26.
