A young Co Down man who died while climbing Ben Nevis will be laid to rest tomorrow.

Samuel Crawford, who was 28 and from Newtownards, died on Tuesday after suffering fatal injuries.

Married just 18 months ago, Mr Crawford was expecting his first child with his wife, Sophie.

The young man was among 24 people who got into difficulty on Ben Nevis last Tuesday.

The other climbers were helped to safety by the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, search and rescue helicopters and a group of soldiers who were climbing the mountain at the time.

However, the Newtownards man fell around 948ft, suffering fatal conditions.

Reverend Garth Wilson, from Sandown Free Presbyterian Church in east Belfast, described the father-to-be as "one of the brightest lights in our congregation in Sandown and we will miss him terribly."

DUP MP Jim Shannon said he had known the Crawford family for years and was "incredibly sorry to hear of his passing".

"He was very committed to his family... he was from a family of great faith, which will be all the more necessary now," he said.

A funeral service for Samuel Crawford will take place tomorrow at 11am at Sandown Road Free Presbyterian Church, Belfast.
