THE Muckamore Abbey Hospital Public Inquiry team is urging those affected by the scandal to attend a virtual information session.

Led by inquiry chair, Tom Kark QC, the zoom event on March 9 will give people the opportunity to engage ahead of the public hearings which are set to begin in May.

The landmark inquiry was ordered by Health Minister Robin Swann in September 2020 to investigate alleged mistreatment of vulnerable adult patients by healthcare staff at the Co Antrim regional facility, including physical abuse and mental cruelty.

Mr Kark said he recognised it will be an "extremely distressing time for some".

"This Inquiry is about the wellbeing of vulnerable people who have been entrusted into the care of others, often away from their families," he said.

"We want all those who have information, of whatever nature, to come forward ahead of the commencement of hearings and I encourage all those affected to engage with the Inquiry...I can assure individuals that all engagement with the Inquiry will be treated with sensitivity."

To date, more than 90 people have contacted the inquiry to provide information.

The chair said the team will examine the "serious and complex issues" at Muckamore Abbey Hospital, which is at the centre of a major police investigation.

A total of 29 people have been arrested while eight are facing prosecution. Almost 80 Muckamore staff - mainly from the nursing workforce - have been suspended by the Belfast trust.

Those who want to attend next month's event are asked to register by phoning the team directly on 028 9051 5462 or by emailing info@mahinquiry.org.uk.
