DUP MP Sammy Wilson has urged UK foreign secretary Liz Truss to act more like Margaret Thatcher ahead of further talks this week with the EU over the NI Protocol.

In a platform piece in the Sunday Express, the East Antrim MP said there were "worrying signs" that Ms Truss' ability to negotiate was being hampered by "diplomatic caution", and urged her to "keep the handbag under the table ready for use" against EU negotiator Maros Sefcovic, in a reference to the late former British Prime Minister Mrs Thatcher.

Former remain campaigner Ms Truss replaced Lord Frost as the UK's chief Brexit negotiator last month, and last week warned she would be prepared to trigger Article 16 of the protocol, the emergency measure to suspend parts of its operation.

Mr Wilson, writing as director of the Centre for Brexit Policy think tank, said Ms Thatcher "famously" stood up to the EU in the 1980s over budget issues, adding: "As she enters a period of intense negotiations with Maros Sefcovic, Liz Truss should learn from the leader she appears to want to emulate."
