A record 7,215 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded by the Department of Health in the past 24 hours.

It brings the total number of positive tests over the last seven days to 35,107.

One further patient who had previously tested positive for the virus has died. It brings the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 2,980.

This morning, there were 314 Covid positive patients in hospital, of whom 34 were in intensive care. Of these, 25 are on ventilators.

There are seven unoccupied ICU beds in the north, one more than yesterday.

Hospitals in the north are over capacity by 162 beds.

Today's figures were released as people planning New Year's Eve celebrations were urged to "think before you act" in hosting or attending house parties due to the highly transmissible nature of Omicron.

Yesterday, Stormont confirmed the Omicron variant now accounts for more than 90 per cent of all Covid-19 cases in the north.
