Family in narrow escape after tree falls on van during strong winds

A father and his two children narrowly escaped injury when a tree fell on their van during strong winds in Co Derry.

The freak accident happened at Catherine Street in Limavady on Wednesday.

A man who came upon the scene initially thought the driver was there to clear fallen branches.

"I went to offer a hand as I thought the man in the van was clearing the debris," said Paul McCorriston.

"It wasn’t until I got closer I realised this man and his kids had been the victims of a freak accident.

"They were a little shaken up but thankfully no one was injured in the accident.

"He (the father) told me he slammed on the brakes and the branch came through the driver side of the window.

"Another few metres and it could have been a different story entirely."

A woman who was travelling behind the van wrote on Facebook: "We were right behind him. Two trees fell, so scary. Never saw gusts of wind like it."

At the time of the incident, winds of up to 60 miles per hour were recorded at nearby Magilligan.
