Woman arrested in Derry in New IRA bomb investigation

Police have arrested a 52-year-old woman in Derry in connection with investigations into the New IRA’s bomb making and explosive storage capacities.

The arrest, in Creggan yesterday, follows the arrest and release of a 36-year-old woman as part of the same investigation a week ago.

Detective Inspector Clara Heaton said yesterday’s arrest was carried out by the PSNI’s Terrorism Investigative Unit.

“The woman, who has been taken to the serious crime suite at Musgrave Police Station in Belfast for questioning, was arrested under the Terrorism Act. Today’s arrest is part of Operation Ledging, which is our ongoing investigation into the New IRA’s bomb making activities as well as the group’s storage of explosive devices and equipment,” she said.

The PSNI spokeswoman said the storage of “unstable, home-make explosive devices” in residential areas indiscriminately put everyone at risk.
