Covid-19: Five more deaths as ICU numbers increase

This morning there were 329 Covid-positive patients in hospital, of whom 38 were in intensive care

A further five patients who had previously tested positive for Covid-19 have died..

The total number of deaths since the pandemic began now stands at 2,912.

Another 1,933 positive cases of the virus have also been recorded,

This morning there were 329 Covid-positive patients in hospital, of whom 38 were in intensive care. Of these, 34 are on ventilators - six more than yesterday. There are six unoccupied ICU beds in the north.

Hospitals in the north are over capacity by 167 beds.

Today's figures were released after Chief Medical Officer Sir Michael McBride said he expects to see a “rapid increase” in cases of the Covid-19 Omicron variant before Christmas.

Mr McBride was speaking after the first three cases of the Omicron variant detected in Northern Ireland were confirmed on Tuesday evening.

He said all three confirmed cases are linked to travel and there is not thought to be community transmission of the variant yet.
